What is your definition of success? I tend to think having lots of money equals success. It doesn’t. Lots of people have made lots of money, and many of them will tell you that being rich doesn’t make you successful. In fact, a successful person recently spent three days telling me just that.

Have you ever heard of Dani Johnson? She’s a true rags to riches story. She’s made lots of money, and lost lots of money. She’s a wealthy woman, but she’s learned to be wealthy in all facets of life. First Steps To Success is her three-day teaching conference that is unlike anything I’ve ever experienced. Thousands of people say the same thing. They have been profoundly changed because of her ability to teach them how to succeed in life.
Keeley and I were introduced to her through the business side of Young Living Essential Oils. Dani knows all about starting and running successful businesses. She also knows that business can become all-consuming and easily distort every other area of your life. She’s learned a lot of life lessons the hard way. My mother would say, “That Dani has been to the school of hard knocks.”
One of the biggest aha moments I had at First Steps To Success is when Dani described the power our thoughts have over our lives. She said,
“Your mind is like a projector and your life is like a screen, and whatever comes out of the projector of your mind is going to show up on the screen of your life.”
That’s a really powerful statement. It got me asking questions like “What is it that I spend my time thinking about?” “What thoughts do I have regarding myself and other people?” “What do I tell myself when I’m having a difficult day?” “Do my thoughts encourage me to believe in my dreams or do they discourage me from dreaming?” “What dreams did I have at 18, and do I still have them today?”
Another aha moment is when Dani said,
“Your excuses are just well planned lies.”
That’s a hard one to swallow, but it’s the truth. We give ourselves time to make excuses. We procrastinate. We find “other” work to do. We waste time. We lie to ourselves. And we surround ourselves with like-minded people so that we can keep living this way.
We all know that the truth will set us free, but first it makes us miserable. Well, Dani isn’t afraid to bring the pain. She doesn’t do it in order to hurt people, but to help them. The surgeon has to inflict a measured amount of pain in order to heal.
The painful truth about each person is this: WE ALL NEED TO CHANGE. And change is painful. But change is the only thing that leads to growth and growth leads to success.
